When you write a blog post, who is it you’re talking to?

You may be sitting like uh…whaaaa??

Which is why I’m writing this blog post because who you’re talking to is actually the most important part of blogging.

What I’m talking about here is called your target audience.

If you want to make a bigger impact, grow your blog like crazy and make a full-time income blogging, you need to fully understand your target audience and be speaking to them with every single piece of content you write.

Got your attention didn’t I?

So who is your target audience and how do you even find these magical people that are oh so important?

How To Find Your Target Audience For Your Blog & Why It Matters

Imagine for a moment spending hours, days and weeks writing amazing content like I know you can, even dabbling in creating a few products here and there, marketing on all the right places and seeing zeros.

No returns.

Or maybe just a few here and there.

But nothing consistent.

You wanna know why this happens?

Because you’re trying to talk to everyone so you’re reaching no one.

Sounds like an oxymoron but it’s just the truth. Because you’re trying to talk a large mass of people, the people that really need to hear you can’t.

And this is why finding your target audience is so imperative.


Why Your Target Audience Matters

We already know your content is the bread and butter of blogging.

And you also know you’ve got to market that amazing content for people to find it.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.

Marketing and creating content becomes a billion times easier when you know who you’re talking to. #science


1. Picking A Niche Is So Much Easier

In the blogging world, niches are pretty endless and can be niched down pretty far but I like to focus on these main seven:

  • Personal Finance
  • Personal Development
  • Beauty & Fashion
  • Lifestyle
  • Making Money
  • Food
  • Health & Fitness

This is where your target audience comes in on a white horse and saves the day.

Once you understand who it is you’re talking to, the niche will just appear.

Think about it.

If your target audience are stay at home/work from home dads or moms then you know you’ll be blogging in the parenting niche.

Maybe your target audience is people looking to travel the world.

Then you’d blog in the traveling or lifestyle niche.

You don’t have to get so caught up in labeling your blog as a certain niche but figuring out who you’re talking to is going to make a lot easier to decide which topics will be on your blog.


2. Creating Quality Content Is A Breeze

Trying to find which types of content to create can be like pulling teeth (although sometimes more painful).

And as bloggers, that’s literally our job.

But it can’t be just any content, it’s got to content your audience wants.

Well, you can’t do that unless you know who it is you’re talking to right?

Once you understand your target audience, you can fully understand their problems and struggles.

Which can turn into all sorts of pieces of content with solid solutions.

See, it all ties in together doesn’t it.


3. You Will Make More Sales

If your goal is to make an income from your blog by affiliate marketing and/or creating products or services of any kind, your target audience plays a key role.

The whole goal of affiliate marketing and creating products is to serve your audience.

And yes, of course, make some money as well.

Let’s cover affiliate marketing first.


Affiliate Marketing & Your Target Audience

If you don’t have a target audience in mind when creating affiliate posts, you won’t know which products to recommend and may only get a few sales here and there.

You wouldn’t try to sell a doggy pacifier (does this exist? I WANT IT) to people looking to travel to Australia.

Extreme example but you get the gist.

The better you know your audience and their pain points, the better knowledge you’ll have on which products will be the solution to their problem.


Products, Services & Your Target Audience

The last thing you want to do when creating a product or service to offer the world is to go in blind.

Seriously, don’t do it. You’ll waste a lot of time and money.

When you have a target audience that you’ve been nurturing either through high-quality content or email marketing or ideally both, you can actually bounce ideas off of them before you even create a product.

Ask them what they want.

Understand their pain points.

This will ensure you are creating the right product and service to better serve your particular audience.


The Easiest Way to Find Your Target Audience

Alright now that you fully understand why finding your target audience matters, let’s talk about where to actually find them.


1. Look At Yourself

Yeah, yeah, we’re starting off a bit cliche here but seriously, 99.9% (that’s a real statistic too) of the time your target audience is going to be extremely similar to yourself.

You probably wouldn’t be writing about what your writing about if you didn’t struggle with it in the past yourself.

That’s why I write about blogging.

Because I had five blogging disasters before I finally figured out how to do this whole blogging thing for a living and it sucked trying to figure it out on my own.

So when on the hunt for your target audience and where to find them, think about where you hang out online.

Think about what you like and some pain points you’ve had.

This will you a solid starting point for figuring out your niche which will help you know where to look.

The clearer you can get on your target audience, the easier everything else will become.


2. Utilize Social Media

In case you didn’t know, there are a plethora of social media platforms to choose from and guess what, most of them have thousands of people in them talking about all kinds of things.

Get out there and get on the social media platforms that you think your audience would hang out on.

Join Facebook groups that have discussions about topics you would like to write about.

This will also help you understand your audience a bit more and really get a feel for what they need, which makes your job a million times easier.


3. Network With Bloggers In Your Niche

That’s right, other bloggers are your friends and most of us are all here to support each other.

You can write guest posts for other larger bloggers in your niche, link to their helpful content and learn from them.

The possibilities are endless.

And networking with larger bloggers can help your own blog be seen by your target audience and help you build up your own audience.


Building Your Target Audience Will Build Your Blog

Like I said above, finding and building a target audience will carry over into everything you do in blogging, growing your traffic, making products and making money.

So it’s really really important.

But as long as you follow the tips I’ve laid out for you above, the easier it will be to find your audience and build your own tribe.
